Today was a milestone. I managed to cancel my Google subscription for storage space in G drive. For the last few years I’ve been paying Google three bucks a month to spy on me and steal my data. Seems like they should be paying me.
In order to do this I had to get my storage down to less than 15G or my old gmail would stop working in a couple of weeks. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to never have to login to that google account again, but it won’t happen overnight.
To get the storage space down I migrated my data to a proton account. But that wasn’t enough. I had over 20G of old emails in my account (and I learned in the Trash).
I’ll expect I’ll need to monitor my old gmail account for a couple months and if anything comes through that I feel is important, make sure the sender knows my new email address. Also there are some logins I have which are based off the old email address so… just need to take this slow.
It was a little nerve racking deleting so many emails. Most of them were in the SENT folder. I was wondering how long it would take before I would find myself wanting to go find an old email for some reason. Turns out it only took a day, but in the end I had the info I needed elsewhere.
I should also mention, I’m not doing this for financial reasons, to save money. In fact I am prepared to spend more money if I have to on these kinds of services if I can do it privately and securely.
